What the Flesch Reading Ease Score Actually Measures
The Flesch Reading Ease formula, developed by Rudolf Flesch, scores text from 0 to 100 based on two factors: average sentence length and average syllables per word. Longer sentences and longer, more syllable-heavy words push the score down (harder to read); shorter sentences and simpler words push it up. The related Flesch–Kincaid grade level converts the same underlying measurements into an approximate US school grade level required to comfortably understand the text.

Why Academic Writing Scores "Difficult" (and Why That's Fine)
Academic writing routinely scores in the 30–50 "difficult" range, and this is not automatically a fault. Subject-specific terminology, longer sentences needed to express qualified, precise claims, and complex sentence structures that show relationships between ideas (subordinate clauses, comparisons, caveats) all reduce a Flesch score while often genuinely improving the quality and precision of academic argument. A marker is not assessing your Flesch score; they are assessing whether your writing is clear, precise, and well-argued, which is a related but distinct quality.
When a Low Readability Score Is Actually a Problem
- If sentences are long because they are poorly structured, not because the idea genuinely requires that length, rather than long because they carry a genuinely complex, qualified argument.
- If jargon is used to sound sophisticated rather than because it is the precise term needed. Precision justifies technical vocabulary; padding does not.
- If a marker's feedback specifically mentions clarity or sentence structure as a weakness, in which case a persistently very low score across a whole piece is worth investigating alongside that feedback.
How to Improve Readability Without Dumbing Down Your Argument
- Vary sentence length deliberately. A piece made entirely of long, complex sentences is harder to follow than one that mixes long analytical sentences with shorter ones for emphasis and pacing.
- Cut unnecessary subordinate clauses, not necessary ones. If a clause adds a genuine qualification or nuance, keep it; if it is there out of habit, cut it.
- Read a difficult paragraph aloud. If you run out of breath or lose the thread of your own sentence, a reader will too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a low Flesch score bad for my grade?
Not on its own. Markers assess argument quality, evidence, and analysis, not a readability formula. A low score becomes relevant only if it reflects genuinely unclear or poorly structured writing, which feedback and your own re-reading will reveal more directly than the number alone.
Why do two paragraphs with similar meaning get different scores?
The formula responds purely to sentence length and syllable count, not meaning. A paragraph using shorter words and sentences to express the same idea will score as more readable, even if the underlying argument is identical in depth.
Is this the same readability check Microsoft Word shows?
Word uses the same published Flesch and Flesch–Kincaid formulas, so results should be very close, with only minor differences possible from how each tool defines a sentence or counts syllables in edge cases.
